Windows 7 End of Life

How to Embrace the End of Life of Windows 7

All good things come to an end, and nowhere is this more true than in the world of technology, where changes happen at warp speed. Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system was revolutionary when it came on the market around ten years ago. Now it’s reaching its end of life, and Microsoft has announced that it’s withdrawing technical support for Window 7 come January 2020.

Why does it matter?

Even after the Windows 7 end of life date, you can still use the operating system so what is the problem? The important part is that Microsoft will stop the security updates. A lot of these updates are created to fix vulnerabilities that are being used by hackers. With those updates gone your system would become an easy target to the new computer viruses and malware being created.

Security concerns equals Business Risk

There are serious security concerns if you continue to use Windows 7 past the end of life date.

This is advice from Microsoft.

“You can continue to use Windows 7, but once support ends, your PC will become more vulnerable to security risks. Windows will operate, but you will stop receiving security and feature updates.”

Microsoft will not take responsibility for any security breaches that happen to Windows 7 systems after 14th January 2020. Because new Malware is being developed daily, you will be at risk. Not only do you risk being hacked and losing all your data you risk a big fine for not being GDPR compliant. If you’re using an operating system that is no longer receiving security updates you are not protecting personal data.

Change is never easy, but it also brings opportunities with it. At Typetec, we want to help you embrace the opportunities that the Windows 7 end of life (EOL) can bring to you and your customers. Microsoft has developed a new modern desktop format for its operations, and we can help you convert seamlessly to that new format.

How a Modern Desktop Works

A modern desktop contains the most up to date versions of the operating systems available on the market. Ideally, it will combine Microsoft Office 365 or Microsoft Surface with Windows 10, Microsoft’s latest operating system. With a modern desktop, you can guarantee that your computers will be efficient, streamlined and secure. All you have to do is load on the operating systems and you’ll have a modern desktop within hours.

You can buy new PCs with Windows 10 already installed on them, but you can also convert your existing PCs from Windows 7 to Windows 10 providing your device supports the suggested minimum requirements.

Microsoft Office 365 is a suite of cloud-based applications that you can use to carry out your daily operational tasks and collaborate on projects. You’ll be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, but you can also collaborate using Teams or store your files securely using OneDrive. Office 365 is a very flexible system and you can integrate the components that are most useful to you in your business.

Benefits of a Modern Desktop

When you switch from Windows 7 to a modern desktop, you’ll see the benefits straight away. One of the biggest advantages is security. Windows 10, Office 365 have built-in security features which update automatically. Installing a modern desktop reduces your chance of a security breach by 40% and cuts down on the number of downtime incidents, so your productivity will increase as well.

You’ll be able to save time and money when you make the switch to a modern desktop. You could potentially save up to 2.5 hours of time a week, because many of the processes on a modern desktop are automated and they make it easy for teams to collaborate. Ultimately, you’ll see the benefits to your bottom line.

Your employees will also enjoy using a modern desktop. Mobile employees, employees who are on the road a lot, report a time saving of nine hours a week. And three-quarters of companies say that they’ve noticed an increase in employee satisfaction when they’re using a modern desktop, and that it’s easier to retain those employees.

If you’d like to find out more about how to make the switch from Windows 7 to a modern desktop, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at Typetec. We’ll be happy to walk you through the process and help you harness the benefits a modern desktop can bring.
